In December 2005 Kirk had driven to Marietta, GA. Many times in his pastorate he would drive to churches that were larger than the one that we were pastoring and sit down with the pastor’s and pick their brain. He drove to Marietta and had a conversation with Pastor Mark Walker. They talked about church growth, they talked about leadership, and they probably talked about three to four hours.
They went to have lunch that day. In the course of their conversations Pastor Mark asked him would he at least consider the possibility of interviewing for the position that had just come open for Mission’s Pastor. Kirk said, “I don’t even know what a Mission Pastor does.” Pastor Mark said, “did you know what you were doing when you started your job?”— Kirk said, “no.” He said, “did you know what you were doing when you became Youth Pastor?”—Kirk said, “no.” He said, “did you know what you were doing when you became Senior Pastor?”—Kirk said, “no.” Pastor Mark then said, “well, you are perfect for the job.” Kirk came home and we had been praying and fasting whether or not God would want us to talk to the leadership at Mount Paran North. We had a sense inside of us that God said don’t close a door that I may be opening. So Kirk called Pastor Mark and said we’ll talk to you and that’s all I can tell you is that we will talk to you.
But this is somewhere around the middle of December and the interviews were not going to begin until the beginning of the year. So we knew that we were four to six weeks out until any of the interviews would begin.
Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. Psalm 31:3
